Chip Timing

JMS Racing Services will provide the timing for the Marion Art’s Festival 5K using the Ipico Sports timing system.  This system offers a dual frequency technology for improved performance over traditional low-frequency timing systems.  The Ipico Sports timing system has been used at many prominent active sport events throughout the world.  One of the largest timed running events in North America, with almost 50,000 finishers, the Boulder Boulder 10K in Colorado was timed in 2007 and 2008 with Ipico Sports equipment.  In 2008 the largest ski race in North America the American Birkebeiner utilized Ipico Sports as the timing equipment of choice.

Participants will be given a timing shoe tag that will switch on as it crosses over each start, split or finish line detection point.  NO other chip may be used in place of the provided transponder.

TIMING SHOE TAG

DETECTION POINT EXAMPLE

Picture 086.jpg

Timing tags are small and lightweight and can be weaved into shoe laces or attached to them with zip or twist ties.  These timing tags are not transferable!  Be careful not to switch with family members, friends, etc.  Timing tags must be worn on the shoe at all times during the event in order to receive any times.

For the most part the Ipico shoe tag is disposable.  After crossing the finish line you will not be stuck in a corral while volunteers struggle to remove your timing tag.  Instead you will be free to roam the area.  Green timing tag recycle bins will be located throughout the venue where you can dispose of your timing shoe tag at your own convenience.

Results to include chip times and splits:

With the availability of chip timing, this year’s Marion Arts Festival 5K will have a detection point that runners will cross over at the start of the race.  This start line detection point will allow for the publishing of a finishers chip time along with their gun time.  If it takes a person 30 seconds to reach the start of the race, that time is deducted to create the chip time.  NOTE: ACCORDING TO USA TRACK AND FIELD RULES, THE AWARDS WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE GUN TIME NOT THE CHIP TIME.

Along with the chip time, the results for the Marion Arts Festival 5K will include split times for the 1 mile, 2 mile and last 1.1 mile marks of the race.  No other 5K event in the area offers such detailed results.

We are always looking for volunteers to help with race day activities. The pay is not the best (a tee-shirt) but it's fun and is a way for one to give something back to the sport of triathlon. If interested call (319) 373-0741.
