In December of 2003,
JMS Racing Services purchased a new state-of-the-art chip timing system from AMB i.t. The AMB system debuted in the
For use during the
event, each participant will receive a transponder chip attached to an
adjustable strap that wraps around the ankle.
Each transponder has a unique identification that is matched to a participant’s
race number and data. Detection loops will
be set up at the finish line and depending upon the event, all other appropriate
split time locations. As an athlete crosses over the detection point, a unique
signal is transmitted by the transponder that eventually ends up in the timing
systems scoring software. At that point,
results can be created and printed for posting.
Chip Distribution:
Chips
will be individually bagged and labeled according to the race bib number. Race day chip distribution is recommended and
is easily accomplished for races with less than 1,000 participants. For larger events or where race day
distribution is not appropriate, these chips can be put into the race packets ahead
of time and distributed as part of the normal packet pickup process.
Chip Collection at Finish Line:
Even
though it is not necessary to set up finish line chutes in a chip timed event,
it is critical to set up some sort of corral area to keep the finishers
contained in until their chips have been removed by a volunteer.
Unreturned or Damaged Chips:
Event
Organizers are held responsible for all transponders. JMS Racing Services will provide a print out of
all lost chips to the event within a few days after it takes place. As a general rule, 99% or more of the chips
are usually returned at most events. A
higher percentage of lost chips occur at events that distribute chips during pre-race
day packet pickup. This is simply because
not all of the people who have signed up for an event will actually show up for
it on race day.
Events
will be charged $50 for every chip that is not returned on race day or within
30 days after the event. We recommend that
events add a clause in the race waiver that passes the responsibility of returning
the chip onto the race participant.
Chip Instructions for Participants:
JMS Racing Services
will provide a Chip Instructions sheet to be put into each races packet. Below is an example of this document.
This event is being
chip timed using the new state-of-the-art AMB Elite Timing System. AMB’s active
transponders have internal long-life batteries that switch on and off as each
athlete crosses over each start, split or finish line detection point. Participants will be given a transponder
attached to an adjustable strap that wraps around the ankle for use during the
event. DO NOT remove the transponder
from the strap and NO other chip may be used in place of the provided
transponder.

These transponders
are not transferable! Be careful not to
switch with family members, friends, etc.
Transponders must be worn at all times during the event in order to
receive any times. For teams, one transponder
will be provided for each team. The
transponder should be passed on to the next team member after each leg of the
event.
As these
transponders are very expensive, it is imperative that all participants return
them at the completion of the event.
Volunteers at the finish line area will be prepared to take back the
transponders as each participant finishes the event. For participants that do not finish, please
return the transponder to the finish line area before leaving the event. Transponders can be mailed back to: JMS

This is our old
traditional service offering of timing an event. Athletes finish in a chute system where their
times are recorded using Time
Machines and their placement is obtained by putting their race pull tag on
a stringer in the proper finishing order.
The times are downloaded from the time machines and the stringer of
finishers is manually entered into the Runscore program.
For multi-sport events, we provide split times by recording the
finishing order at each split location on tic sheets. These tic sheets are used in place of the
stringer which is still used at the finish line. We will bring the stringers, tic sheets,
bandit cards, and chute opening cards to an event. All you need is to order run numbers, pin,
and bike numbers for multi-sport events.
